The initial project of AMATA POWER LIMITED, Amata-EGCO Power Limited (AEP), was established as a joint venture with Electricity Generating PCL. (EGCO) in late 1995. AEP's goal was to develop a 165 MW co-generation power plant under the Small Power Producer (SPP) program at the Amata Nakorn Industrial Estate. The construction of the combined cycle portion was completed in July 1998.

The grand opening ceremony of Amata-EGCO Combined Cycle Power Plant was graciously presided by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on September 27, 1999.

AEP is the first Thai Small Power Producer project to be financed on a limited resource basis without any guarantees from other local banks.
